Koalas are cute, kangaroos are adorable, and wallabies are awesome. But as I hiked in Mt. Field National Park, I became acquainted with the cutest of them all: a miniature wallaby-like critter called a pademelon. I saw five on my day hike, and thought I'd hit the cute jackpot. Not even close.
I went back to Mt. Field for a night hike. There was no one else in the park, and it was pitch black. I only hiked up to Russell Falls, but within an hour I lost count of pademelons and Aussie possums (no resemblance to American possums. These are cute and chubby). Saw some glow worms too (not cute).
Reason enough for more hiking.
